Jaap Klevering

Jaap Klevering is a sound and performance artist. He is an improvisor, developer of new ideas and innovative developer of art projects. Jaap is born Dutch and lives and works in Finland since 1983.

The basis to his work is silence, but often there are contradictions and opposites.

He uses voice, movement, speech, digitally shaped sound scapes, video and objects. He collaborates with musicians, dance- theater- and visual artists. He teaches his work at dance and theater academies in Finland and abroad.

He received financial support from among others the Finnish Art Council and the European Union. In 1999 he received a 3-year grant from the Finnish Art Council and in 2009 a 1-year grant from the Finnish Culture Foundation. At the moment he holds a vacancy at the Lapland Regional theater.

It's december. Darkest period of the year. First snow falling. Villages are spare, traffic very little.


I drive for hours and hours on these empty roads. Camera in the other hand, listening to the same music as in this video.


This was a 8 hour drive from Kerma to Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. 2011.
